New Treatment to Prevent Peanut Allergy

By: Dr. Bykowsky

Peanut allergy is of growing concern in the United States and the incidence has been increasing. Reactions to peanuts can be life threatening and usually persist for life. A recent study “Learning Early About Peanuts” (LEAP) was initiated because of the observation that children who consumed peanuts from an early age had much lower rates of peanut allergy. The risk for peanut allergy is much greater in certain populations such as children with severe eczema or egg allergy. The reduction in peanut allergy can be seen in lower risk groups as well if given peanut at an early age.
New guidelines have been released on how to best address this issue. We can help you determine if your child is at risk of peanut allergy and develop a strategy to best prevent them from developing it. For more information on this you can schedule an appointment with one of our Board Certified allergists. You can also get more information on line by researching “LEAP Study”.
